Gratitude is good for your health
Did you know that focusing on what we appreciate in life offers us health benefits? In addition to increasing the hormones in our bodies that help us feel more relaxed and happier, giving thanks for things in our lives can ease stress and tension. This may mean that we feel less physical pain in our bodies from tension headaches or muscle tightness, and we often feel more able to face whatever life brings. We may feel more motivated to make choices that help us meet our goals for health and well-being.
Take a few minutes each day to think about what brings you happiness, joy, peace, or a sense of security. This may include friends and family members, your home or work, beauty in the natural world around you, or the simple rituals in your day that you enjoy, such as having a warm cup of coffee or tea in the morning. You can practice this any time, and the results can be immediate. Simply close your eyes, think of something you appreciate, and allow your mind and body to relax as you focus on this feeling of gratitude.
Here are a few tips to support you in feeling grateful for things in your life:
- Before you get out of bed in the morning or go to sleep at night, think of one thing you appreciate about your daily life.
- Keep a gratitude journal where you list a few things you are grateful for each day.
- Every day tell at least one person what you appreciate about them.
- When you take a walk or go outside, notice something you like about the natural world around you and stop for a moment to enjoy it.
- Before you eat a meal or enjoy an activity, share your gratitude by saying a short prayer or words of thanksgiving for the experience.
