Want to stop overspending on groceries?
If so, this blog is for you. Follow these five easy steps and start saving.
Check your inventory.
Browse your pantry and refrigerator to avoid spending on items you already have in stock. Knowing what you have at home can also help you plan meals to utilize the foods you have. Check dates on canned foods and the quality of your fresh produce and use them before they go to waste.
Create a shopping list and stick to it.
Make a meal plan for the week and buy only the ingredients you’ll need for that week. If you have children, have them help you create the list. You may notice they’ll be more eager to eat the healthy treats they added to the list.
Avoid shopping when hungry.
Most people overspend and choose unhealthy foods when hungry.
Shop on the perimeter of the store.
You may already know this. Fresh produce, meat and dairy products are on the perimeter of the store. If you stay away from the middle aisles you will be doing your wallet and your body a favor as most expensive and unhealthy pre-packaged foods are located there.
Compare prices.
Fresh vs frozen, bulk vs packaged foods, brand vs generic. Do not be shy about using coupons. Remember, every penny counts!
Make sure to cook according to the number of members in your household and if you end up with leftovers, get creative with them.
Happy saving!
Tip: Cook simple, healthy recipes that do not require a lot of ingredients so you can save even more.
