Take a moment to be mindful
With all that is happening in the world right now, it is very important that we take care of ourselves more deeply than we may have in the past. Many people practice mindfulness to center themselves and relax more deeply into the present moment, which creates a sense of resiliency and calm. We may not be able to solve every challenge that faces us in this moment, but we are able to choose how we respond to what is happening.
If you have never tried mindfulness, this is a great time to start. It’s easy and you can do it wherever you are. Here is a simple way to have a “mindful moment” right now.
- Wherever you are, sit or stand comfortably, with your back straight and your shoulders relaxed.
- Focus your awareness on the breath coming in and out of your body. Simply notice how it is moving and feel it rise and fall in your chest. Allow your breath to move through you in its own rhythm.
- Close your eyes or soften your gaze, looking down or at an object nearby. Notice anything you hear, smell, or feel right now. Continue breathing. Allow thoughts to move through without judging them. Simply notice whatever you hear, smell, or feel. If you notice something that brings you a sense of calm or happiness, keep your awareness there. Allow your body to relax into the moment.
- When you are ready, bring your awareness back to your breath. Take a deep breath in and out, allowing your body to relax even more. Bring your awareness back to your surroundings. Move back into your day with a feeling of calm in your mind and body.
