The wellness wheel and you: financial well-being
Finances are an important part of our lives. In some periods of life, it can feel more difficult to make ends meet, and sometimes we find that we have enough to take care of our expenses, save for the future, and even give to others. No matter what our current situation brings, it is important to focus on our financial well-being. Financial well-being is about managing our money and resources to meet our needs. In each stage of life, we can learn new skills to make the most of what we have.
As you consider your finances, remember a few important tips.
- Create a budget: List your monthly and yearly expenses, including the unexpected costs that can arise. Plan something for recreation and well-being. Try to put into your budget a certain amount that you will save for the future.
- Think about other resources: In addition to money that may come through work or other sources, consider all the resources available to you. Do you have support to help with childcare? Can you do an exchange of time with someone for services, such as yard care and cooking? Remember that many organizations are available to support individuals and families to meet their needs. Think about needs you have that may be met with a little outside or community support.
- If you are able, consider giving to others: After you’ve set aside money for spending and for personal saving, think about an amount you may have available to give to others. Consider a monthly or annual donation to a favorite organization, give to fundraisers for events or community needs that arise, or buy groceries for a family in need.
